CHAPTER NINE
“This is delicious, Mrs. Callaway,” Adam said, as he placed another piece of roast chicken in his mouth. The chicken was moist and flavoursome, with succulent, crispy skin. It was one of the best meals Adam had enjoyed in months. Probably because it was home-cooked—roast chook, pan gravy, potatoes, pumpkin, and beans. Heaven.
“Thank you, dear,” Marion replied. “Although I’ve told you to call me Marion. Mrs. Calloway was my husband’s mother. She was a fussy old bat.”
“Mum,” Joey protested, “you can’t say that about Nana.” He looked indignant.
“Of course I can, Joey. I’m just speaking the truth. Even your Dad would have agreed. She was an interfering old busybody, sticking her nose in other people’s business where it wasn’t wanted.”
Marion leaned towards Adam and lowered her voice. “That was the one good thing about selling the property and moving in to the pub. Joey’s nana was talking about selling her house in town and moving in with us, but once she found out we were taking over the pub, she changed her mind. Didn’t want to mix with the riffraff. Too lowbrow for her. All those airs and graces. If only her so-called friends had known she was knocked up with Joey’s father before she got married—”
“Mum! Adam isn’t interested in hearing all this.”
Adam glanced across the table at Joey, who looked mortified, red flooding his cheeks, as he looked daggers at his mother. Adam tried not to laugh, almost choking as he swallowed the mouthful of chicken. “Oh, I beg to differ. I love hearing about your family, Joey,” he teased.
Joey’s gaze shot daggers towards Adam instead.
“Lighten up, love,” Marion admonished. “I know you loved Nana. I did too. She loved her family and wanted the best for us all. But you can’t hide from the facts. Her idea of best wasn’t necessarily right. She wanted position and recognition. Your dad and I just wanted home and family. She did have a few good points, though. The best thing about her was her puddings and cakes.” Marion looked back to Adam. “Nana Callaway’s fruit cake won many awards at the local shows.”
“And her golden syrup dumplings… oh my God.” Joey looked like he was about to drool.
“Speaking of which, I’ve got a chocolate pudding in the oven. I’ll just go check it now, if you’ll excuse me, boys.” Marion pushed back her chair, and Adam stood as she left the table. She smiled at Joey and gave him a wink. “And such lovely manners. This one’s a keeper.”
“Oh jeez.” Joey hung his head in his hands as his mother left the room.
When he looked up, Adam’s heart melted. Joey was gorgeous. All flushed pale skin and large blue eyes, his auburn hair tousled from his running his fingers through it.
“Sorry about that,” Joey murmured.
“Hey, absolutely nothing to be sorry about. I really like your mum. She’s honest and straightforward, certainly not one to beat around the bush, and I like that about her. It’s obvious she loves you and wants you to be happy.
